Special Programs July 2008

The Seniors Program, held at the Community Activity Center, located at One Normal Plaza, has many varied programs for everyone in the McLean County area that are 60 years of age or older. Seniors are welcome every weekday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

SENIORS PROGRAM SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE

The Normal Township Seniors Program shuttle bus service is available to seniors 60 years of age or older in Normal Township. The shuttle bus service offers door to door transportation to and from the Community Activity Center. The shuttle bus operates Monday through Friday according to the Seniors Program calendar year. Pickup time begins at 9:00 am and runs until approximately 10:00 am. The return trips take place at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm The cost for riding the bus is $1.00 each way. In order to run an efficient shuttle bus service, all riders will need to reserve a seat on the shuttle bus by Noon one day in advance.

4TH OF JULY BINGO: BLOOMINGTON REHABILITATION: TUESDAY, JULY 1ST, 11:00 AM

Alison, from Bloomington Rehabilitation will host 4th of July Bingo on Tuesday, July 1st at 11:00 am. Numerous prizes will be given to the lucky winners. Come and join Alison for this special hour of bingo.

FREE COMPUTER HELP: TUESDAYS, JULY 1ST, 8TH, 15TH, 22ND, & 29TH, 12:00 NOON

Do you need help operating your home computer? If so, Jim Henry will be available in the computer lab Tuesdays at 12:00 noon this month to assist you. If Tuesdays do not work for you, call Jim at 888-9754, or e-mail him at jimhenry30@comcast.net

ROUTE 66 RED HAT SOCIETY ANNUAL PICNIC: WEDNESDAY, JULY 2ND, 11:30 AM

The Route 66 Red Hatters of Normal is scheduled to meet for their annual July picnic on Wednesday, July 2nd at 11:30 am at Underwood Park off of Jersey Avenue. You will not meet at the Community Activity Center before the picnic. Don't forget to wear your red hat and purple outfit! GREAT BOOKS: THURSDAY, JULY 3RD, 10:00 AM - NOON

Great Books reading and discussion programs introduce adult participants to significant works of literature. Academy of Seniors Great Books is scheduled to meet on Thursday, July 3rd from 10:00 am - Noon. For more information contact Jay Edmondson at 309-747-2883.

JEANNE LEDBETTER: WATERCOLOR CLASS: MONDAYS, JULY 7TH & 14TH, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Jeanne Ledbetter's Watercolor class will meet from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on Monday, July 7th & 14th. The cost of the class is $65.00. To register, contact the Seniors Program at 888-9099. There is a maximum of 15 students. Payment is due by Wednesday, July 2nd.

BEGINNER COMPUTER CLASS: MONDAYS, JULY 7TH, 14TH, 21ST, & 28TH, 9:30 - 11:30 AM

Kay Wilson will teach a beginner computer class on file management and the use of Windows. This class will meet on Mondays starting July 7th. A fourth class intended for questions and answers will be held on Monday, July 28th. Classes meet from 9:30-11:30 am. This class is intended for seniors who are just beginning to use the computer. The cost of the three day class is $15.00. Registration for the July Beginner Computer class is on a first come first serve basis. Registration will begin at 9:00 am on Monday, June 30th at The Community Activity Center, One Normal Plaza, 1110 Douglas St. in Normal. Payment is due upon registration.

SUPERMARKET BINGO: HEARTLAND HEALTHCARE: TUESDAY, JULY 8TH, 11:00 AM

Melody, from Heartland Healthcare, will host Supermarket Bingo on Tuesday, July 8th at 11:00 am. Numerous prizes will be given to the lucky winners. Come and join Melody for this special hour of bingo.

PENNSYLVANIA LIFE INSURANCE CO.: DENTAL INSURANCE: WEDNESDAY, JULY 19TH, 10:30 AM

Do you need dental insurance? If so, join Lenny Martin, agent from Pennsylvania Life Insurance Co., on Wednesday, July 9th at 10:30 am to see what dental coverage is available to you. Refreshments will be served and everyone will leave with great giveaways.

NPL BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP: FRIDAY, JUNE 6TH, 10:15 - NOON

The NPL book discussion group chooses paperback books to read and purchase, and then discusses them on the first Friday of each month. The discussion group is lead by Kay Wilson. This month's meeting will take place on Friday, June 6th, from 10:15 - Noon. The group uses books that are available at the Normal Public Library. BUS TRIP: WHITE PINES INN: OREGON, IL., THURSDAY, JULY 10TH, 8:45 AM - 5:30 PM

The Seniors Program is sponsoring a bus trip to White Pines Inn in Oregon, IL for lunch and the spectacular show, "When the 20's Roared", on Thursday, July 10th. You will need to arrive at the Community Activity Center at 8:45 am. The bus will leave at 9:00 am and return at approximately 5:30 pm. The cost of this trip is $62.00 and includes transportation, lunch at the White Pines Inn, show, and drivers tip. This trip is currently full.

CAROLYN LOEB: PAINTING WITH PENCIL: THURSDAY, JULY 10TH, 17TH, & 24TH 9:00 AM - 12:00 NOON

Carolyn Loeb's Pencil Drawing class will meet from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon on three consecutive Thursdays starting on July 10th. The cost of the class is $40.00. To register, contact the Seniors Program at 888-9099. There is a maximum of 15 students. Payment is due by Wednesday, July 2nd.

BUNCO: FRIDAY, JULY 11TH, 12:30 AM

Come and join us on Friday, July 13th at 12:30 pm for a fun dice game. Bunco is played in rounds. Players take turns rolling the dice trying to accumulate as many points as possible to win each round. The game is played at tables of four in competing teams of two. YOUNG AT HEARTLAND SHOWCASE: FRIDAY, JULY 11TH, 1:00 PM

The Young at Heartland acting workshop is designed for seniors who want to share their love of theatre with other seniors. This year join them on Friday, July 11th at 1:00 pm to view their selections that deal with change. It is a subject very familiar to senior citizens. It happens in all of our lives. It can be leaving a job, moving to a new home, or dealing with family dynamics. Some changes are pleasant and exciting, while other fill us with anxiety. In the performance pieces the audience with observe how some people deal with change. Donations with be accepted to support the Young at Heartland program.

FIRE CRACKIN BINGO: VITAL WELLNESS: TUESDAY, JULY 15TH, 11:00 AM

Anitha from Vital Wellness will host Fire Crackin Bingo on Tuesday, July 15th at 11:00 am. Numerous prizes will be given out to the lucky winners. Come and join Anitha for this special hour of bingo.

WORD WEAVERS: TUESDAY, JULY 15TH, 1:00 PM

Word Weavers, a local group of area writers, will meet on Tuesday, July 15th at 1:00 pm. The group shares writing techniques and writing ideas. Come and share your ideas. For more information call 888-9099.

BROMENN: CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD): WEDNESDAY, JULY 16TH, 10:30 AM

On Wednesday, July 16th at 10:30 am Chad S Goveia, RRT/RCP Pulmonary Education Specialist, from BroMenn Respiratory Care, will discuss pulmonary function, COPD, what causes COPD, and the best treatments.

ART EXTRAVAGANZA: WEDNESDAY, JULY 16TH, 1:00 - 3:00 PM

The Seniors Program is sponsoring an Art Extravaganza on Wednesday, July 16th from 1:00-3:00 pm. The Art Extravaganza is open to all of our Seniors Program artists. There is a maximum of 2 pieces per artist. If you have your own table or floor easels we would appreciate it if you would bring them along with your artwork. Come show off your artistic talent to you friends, family, and fellow artists. Light refreshments will be served. Reserve your space today by calling the Seniors Program at 888-9099. Your artwork must be dropped off at the Seniors Program no later than 9:30 am on Wednesday, July 16th.

GENEALOGY: THURSDAY, JULY 17TH, 1:00 PM.

The monthly Genealogy group will meet on Thursday, July 17th at 1:00 pm. If you are interested in sharing new and old genealogy ideas, new software, and Internet sites, come join this group. For more information call 888-9099.

MOVIE: FRIDAY, JULY 18TH, 12:30 PM

On Friday, July 18th at 12:30 pm a movie will be shown on our BIG SCREEN TV. Refreshments will be served. In the event that a title is not available on its screening day, every effort will be made to find a suitable replacement.

On Friday, July 18th: Movie: The Bucket List - Two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die.

SUMMER SIZZLE BINGO: EVERGREEN SENIOR LIVING: TUESDAY, JULY 22ND, 11:00 PM

Joyce Benton from Evergreen Senior Living will host Summer Sizzle Bingo on Tuesday, July 22nd at 11:00 am. Numerous prizes will be given out to the lucky winners. Come and join Joyce for this special hour of bingo.

SHIP (SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM): TUESDAY, JULY 22ND, 1:00-3:00 PM.

The Seniors Program, sponsored by Normal Township, provides space for YWCA/RSVP Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) volunteers to individually and privately counsel and assist seniors with Medicare or Health Insurance questions on Tuesday, July 22nd from 1:00-3:00 pm. The counselors providing assistance are trained through the State of Illinois.

HUMANA: OSTEOPOROSIS: WEDNESDAY, JULY 23RD, 10:30 AM

Join Donald Shandrow, sales representative from Humana, on Wednesday, July 23rd at 10:30 am to learn how Humana's plan supports individuals with Osteoporosis. If you have any questions contact the Seniors Program at 888-9099.

TEXAS HOLD'EM POKER TOURNAMENT: FRIDAY, JULY 25TH, 12:30 PM

Terry Fry will host a Texas Hold'em Poker tournament on Friday, July 25th at 12:30 pm. Experienced, as well as inexperienced players are encouraged to participate. There is no buy-in required. You will be playing with chips that will be provided. The winner of the tournament will receive a trophy.

PINOCHLE TOURNAMENT: TUESDAY, JULY 29TH, 12:30 PM

TAI CHI I & II APPRECIATION BRUNCH: WEDNESDAY, JULY 30TH, 12:30 PM

The Seniors Program will host an appreciation brunch for the members of this class on Wednesday, July 30th at 10:30 am,

CARDS

Almost every afternoon Monday through Friday seniors are invited to play cards. You will find tables for bridge, pinochle, and euchre. Individuals wanting to play bridge and pinochle will need to call the Seniors Program at 888-9099 to have your name put on a list for a table. You will need to call one day in advance by 3:00 PM. to secure your spot for the following day. Bridge starts at 12:30 pm. and play continues until 3:00 pm. Pinochle table times are as follows: 10:00 am - 12:00 noon & 12:30 - 3:00 PM.

PEACE MEAL

The Community Activity Center is a Peace Meal site. Noontime meals are served Monday through Friday and are available for all persons 60 and over. Participants are served a delicious well-balanced meal containing at least 1/3 of the daily adult nutritional requirements. There is a suggested donation of $3.00 for the meal. We would like to encourage seniors to get out of their homes and enjoy a meal in the company of friends and neighbors. In order for the proper number of meals to be prepared and if needed, transportation scheduled, please make your reservation(s) by 12:00 noon one day in advance calling 888-9099. .

WHAT ARE OPEN CLASSES

If you see a class advertised as an OPEN class, it means the class is open to the public free of charge. The OPEN classes may also serve as an introduction for those interested in registering for an exercise class. In addition, the open classes held between sessions, also serve as make-up classes for participants and instructors.
